If you haven’t yet visited Phoenix Bakery, you need to plan a trip to this LA institution. Yum.
Founded in 1938 by Fung Chow Chan and his wife, Wai Hing, the Chinatown bakery featured traditional Chinese pastries and cookies. In the 1940s, Fung Chow’s brother, Lun, a baker trained in Hong Kong and America, joined the bakery and developed the bakery’s trademark fresh strawberry whipped cream cake. By the 1970s, the bakery was overwhelmingly popular and the store was moved to a larger space on Broadway where it exists today.
The bakery is still family-owned and operated, and is a staple of the community, popular with the Dodgers, the Lakers, Mayors, and community members.
Phoenix Bakery is located in Chinatown at: 969 N. Broadway LA, CA, 90012.
