Jesse Jackson was the first Presidential campaign to come to Little Tokyo. Our photos document that 1984 visit.
He consistently advocated for building a “Rainbow Coalition.” In the above photo, he is addressing a lunchtime crowd at the Japanese American Community and Cultural Center’s Plaza.
Although Jesse Jackson failed to capture the nomination at the Democratic National Convention, his campaign inspired many minorities, women and other Rainbow participants to become involved in the electoral process and to fight for the empowerment of these communities.
