Last fall, Misaki Matsui, a photographer originally from Japan, contacted the archives at VC to see if we could help her find more information about her grandfather and great-grandfather. After moving to the U.S., she surprisingly discovered that they had lived in America– in the Central Valley region in California– 100 years prior. Misaki then embarked on a photographic journey to retrace the steps her great-grandfather and grandfather took many years before. Misaki will be giving a talk about her experience at the Japanese American National Museum next Saturday. Please attend, or read more about her journey here

Back to California after 100 Years with Misaki Matsui
Upon her recent arrival in the United States, Japanese photographer Misaki Matsui uncovered a little known chapter in her family’s history—her grandfather had previously lived in California 100 years before. Misaki set out to learn more about her grandfather’s life in California by following and photographing the footsteps he had taken a century ago. Q&A to follow.
